It Turns Out The 'Macarena' Has Some Very Dirty Lyrics

In the summer of 1996, just about all of America, as well as the rest of the world, got caught up in the viral dance craze the "Macarena." The hit Los Del Rio song was everywhere and wound up spending a near-record amount of time at number one on the charts. The dance track was not only all over the radio, it was on TV, in the news, and playing at all the parties that took place in '96 and '97. While it seemed that every person, young and old, knew all the moves to the hit song, it turns out not too many paid close attention to the lyrics. In fact, it took until now before most people really realized what the "Macarena" is actually about.

The lyrics are incredibly racy, and that's just the English ones. If you translate some of the Spanish it gets even more risque.

Take the chorus, which goes, "Dale a tu cuerpo alegría Macarena/Que tu cuerpo es pa' darle alegría cosa Buena/Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena." If you don't habla Español, that means, "Give your body some joy, Macarena, 'cause your body is for giving joy and good things to it."

Meanwhile, the whole song is about a woman whose boyfriend is away in the army and she winds up enjoying the company of his two best friends. Lyrics include, "They all want me/They can't have me/So they all come and dance beside me/Move with me/Chant with me/And if you're good, I'll take you home with me," and "But don't you worry about my boyfriend/He's a boy who's name is Victorino/I don't want him/Couldn't stand him/He was no good so I/Now come on, what was I supposed to do?/He was out of town and his two friends were so fine."

Some people even started reading deeper into the lyrics and things turned a little dark:

You'll probably never listen to the song the same way again.
