Good News: Hobby Leads to Prosthetic Arm for Boy

Ray Buckland of Price, UT was looking for a hobby, so he got into 3D printing.  He printed a spatula, an ice cream scooper, and a new handle for a can opener, but he’s most proud of one project in particular: a prosthetic arm he made for a 3-year-old boy named Robert.

Robert was born without half of his left arm, but his mother found that even with insurance, prosthetic arms can cost as much as $12,000. She was talking to a friend about it, and this friend happens to be Ray’s granddaughter. Ray was happy to help and starting researching what it would take to create an arm on his 3D printer.

It took 80 hours of printing, the materials only cost about $25, and now Roberthas a new arm.  He calls it his “robot arm.”

It’s been 2 weeks since getting the arm and his mother said he hasn’t stopped smiling.
