Jordin Sparks Shares Her Battle With Postpartum Depression

Jordin Sparks had a tough transition following the birth of her 12-month-old son, Dana Isaiah Jr.

In a candid interview with Us Weekly, the first-time mom opened up about her battle with postpartum depression in the months after having her baby boy. "Everybody knows about what postpartum depression is — maybe not exactly what it all entails because it’s different for each woman — but there’s this thing called the fourth trimester, which happens after you have your baby," the 29-year-old singer shared. "It’s dealing with everything that happens with your body. Your body goes and changes, your hormones are absolutely insane."

"Then you're dealing with this baby and then something doesn’t go right," Jordin continued. "We've got tons of people to hold the baby, but who hold us? Who holds us together? Who helps us get through all that stuff? Obviously, people in your family who knows what you’ve been through and had kids before, but sometimes it feels hard to reach out because you’re like, 'How do I feel so lonely when this amazing thing just happened?'"

The American Idol winner said that it was with the help of her friend and fellow mom Morgan, who was pregnant around the same time she was, she was able to pull through. "I would talk to her and be like, 'I feel like this today. Sorry, I just needed to let you know,'" she explained. "And she’d be like, 'No, I understand. That was me yesterday.' I’d be like, 'Oh, God. Thanks. OK. Good. I know I’m not the only one.'"

Jordin's brave confession comes just weeks after news of her stepfather James Jackson's passing. The firefighter and Army veteran died on May 7 after suffering a stroke at the age of 50. His death came just 15 months after Jordin's family suffered another tragic loss — the death of James' daughter, Jordin's stepsister, Bryanna Jackson-Frias. The 16-year-old died of complications from her lifelong battle with sickle cell anemia, People reports.
