Chris Daughtry's Wife Deanna Comes Out As Bisexual Through Song

Chris Daughtry and his wife, Deanna, are getting candid about their relationship via the American Idol alum's new single, "As You Are," an emotional coming out ballad that was penned by the latter.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Daughtry said that his new cut was written by Deanna and inspired by her very own struggle to accept her bisexuality. Despite being married since 2000, the pop/rock singer said that he learned of Deana's sexuality shortly after they met and before his Idol fame, but he simply didn't care. "I didn't care," he told the magazine about learning that she had been in a relationship with a women in her past. "I didn't feel threatened. I wanted her to be happy with who she was and not hide that or be ashamed."

Still, it took Deanna a while to find self-acceptance. "I was hiding and shutting down a part of myself, and it was causing me to shut down so many good, beautiful things about myself," she explained. "As I built these walls up to protect myself, I was creating a prison, and I couldn't fully experience life and people couldn’t fully experience me -- and it's all based on fear."

In 2015, she took those emotions to paper and penned a song called "As You Are," which appears on her husband's latest album, Cage to Rattle, which dropped in 2018. "I'm super-proud that she feels strong enough to be so open and honest about it," the singer said of his wife, who has officially come out with the release of the track. "We're both after the same goal, and that’s being our true selves to each other."
